Learn about the tide mills of Midcoast Maine
Join historian Bud Warren of Topsham, who has researched and documented over 150 Maine tide mills, on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Boothbay Region Adult Ed for an interesting and informative talk, “The Tide Mills of Midcoast Maine.”
Warren has researched and lectured extensively on maritime topics and has also been active in several archaeological excavations of Maine's coastal sites.
What is a tide mill, and what role did they play in our economic history?
Two centuries ago, Midcoast Maine was a hub of industrial activity. Between Portland and Wiscasset there were over 50 sawmills, gristmills, and other machines powered by the tides.
All that is left now are remnants of tidal dams and posts in the mud at low tide. Silent for more than half a century, sounds of grinding millstones and the rasping saws told how Mainers used the tides.
Early settlers took advantage topography, damming coves, and setting wheels to harness power from the waters.
Bud will also talk about current efforts to re-harness the ocean’s power for the 21st century. The time is 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Boothbay Region High School.
