Lincoln County Historical Association summer events
The summer is well underway and so are the Lincoln County Historical Association’s (LCHA) events. All three LCHA historic sites are now open for the season: Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta and the 1811 Old Jail in Wiscasset are open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.; the Pownalborough Court House in Dresden is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
For the 2016 season, the 1811 Old Jail has on display a special exhibit of photographs that document life in Lincoln County in the early 1900s. These fascinating pictures taken by E. Joseph Leighton form the foundation of Michael Chaney’s master’s thesis presented in 1985. Chaney worked with Leighton’s glass plate negatives to make poster-size prints with annotations. This exhibit will run until early October.
Summer with the Past one-week children’s programs still have openings. The July week will be held at the Pownalborough Court House July 18-22. August 8-12 is the children’s week at the 1811 Old Jail. Children ages 8 through 11 are invited to join in the fun and will participate in a varied selection of activities including games and art. Please visit the LCHA website at www.lincolncountyhistory.org or call 207-882-6817 for more information.
On July 23, the Chapman-Hall House will hold its annual yard sale from 9 a.m. to noon at the corner of Church and Elm in Damariscotta. The sale includes a wide variety of treasures old and new.
LCHA’s first Kermess event will be held on July 24. Come and enjoy a traditional lobster bake (with rib eye steak and vegetarian options), music by the Pan Fried Steel, and a silent auction of antiques. Reservations are required in advance as seating is limited. Reservations can be made through the LCHA website (www.lincolncountyhistory.org) or by calling 207-882-6817.
Don’t forget to consider a visit to one of the LCHA historic sites when entertaining summer company. Each building offers a unique look at a rich piece of Lincoln County’s early history. The Lincoln County Historical Association is a nonprofit organization that provides stewardship for the 1754 Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta, the 1761 Pownalborough Courthouse in Dresden, and the 1811 Old Jail and Museum in Wiscasset.
