Living history site proposed in Edgecomb
Edgecomb Historical Society board member Dave Boucher spoke with Edgecomb selectmen Monday at their meeting on Monday about a possible future EHS home.
EHS has identified a town-owned property near Town Hall Road and Route 27 for possible use. In a briefing document presented to the selectmen, the EHS board of directors called the location “Our true town center.”
Saying many of the town’s founding fathers are buried in the cemetery near the property, the document went on to identify the site as “the perfect location for the Edgecomb Historical Society to call home.” Boucher said EHS began discussing a permanent site about two years ago and hopes to get a lease from the town so a small “living history” compound can be created. This would begin with a blacksmith shop and progress to include more displays.
Boucher said the EHS board is looking for approval from the selectmen to continue to investigate possible use of the property. He said EHS realized the project would need town meeting approval, and wondered if the nonprofit could lease the land. Selectman Ted Hugger said he would contact Maine Municipal Association to see what the legal considerations would be for a lease.
Selectman Mike Smith felt the idea was a “great opportunity." Chair Jack Sarmanian added, "It’s critical that the whole town knows about it.”
The EHS annual meeting is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the town hall.
Selectmen announced a public meeting with Maine Department of Transportation is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 22 at the for MDOT to respond to questions about the Route 27/Route 1 intersection.
Since selectmen have not received a response from the letters sent to the Lallis property abutters, it was agreed the deadline would be extended another two weeks.
Selectmen meet next at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8 at the town hall. The town office will be closed that day.
Anyone wishing to assist as an evening elections clerk for elections should contact Town Clerk Claudia Coffin at 882-7018.
