Maurice L. Pickering, 69, of West Alna Road, Wiscasset died suddenly Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at Maine Medical Center in Portland with his family by his side.

He was born in Castine on August 6, 1944, a son of Lester W. and Ruby M. (Perkins) Pickering. He attended Bucksport and Wiscasset schools. On October 6, 1961 he married Dorothy J. Grover. Maurice was a self-employed truck driver for many years. From 1991 until his retirement on October 1, 2013 he was employed by the town of Wiscasset.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working, and was proud to have built the homes of each of his children. Spending time with his family and grandchildren, going out to eat, and hanging out at Johnny’s Auto were a just a few of his favorite pastimes. He will lovingly be remembered by all those who knew him for his dry humor and quick wit. There was never a dull moment when Maurice was around.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy “Dot” Pickering; his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Lori Pickering; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Stanley Dalton and Penny and Tom Niles; and his sister, Edith Cronk; all of Wiscasset. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Kelsey and Zachary Pickering, Melissa and Heather Matthews, and Ben Masten; and four step-grandchildren, Jeremy Dalton, Cari Jewett, and Shawn and Darren Niles. Maurice was also blessed with two step-great-grandchildren, Colin Dalton and Bristol Jewett.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, David Pickering, and his sister, Linda Barter.

A celebration of his life will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 1 at the Alna Fire Department. All are invited to come and pay tribute to Maurice by sharing your memories and funny stories. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Wiscasset in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice in memory of Maurice.
