The most recent National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators report, issued in June 2012, indicates that Mid Coast Hospital ranks in the top 10 percent of hospitals across the country for the percentage of nationally certified nurses on staff.

More than 37 percent of nurses practicing at Mid Coast Hospital have passed specialty certification exams, compared to the national average of 15 percent. Although all registered nurses are required to pass an entry-level exam in order to be licensed, nurses who commit to specialty certification demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning.

“The high number of specialty certified nurses that work at Mid Coast illustrates our commitment to providing the very best care to our patients and community,” Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care Services Deb MacLeod said. “Having such a highly qualified team of caregivers better positions us to respond to the increasingly complex needs of our patients.”

National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators is a resource that collects nurse-related data for comparison with more than 1,500 hospitals nationwide.

Mid Coast Hospital participates in the database service in order to evaluate and support ongoing efforts to improve patient safety and deliver exceptional patient care. Mid Coast Hospital is the only community hospital in Maine to have achieved national recognition as a Magnet Hospital; an honor bestowed on only 6 percent of the hospitals in the country for exceptional nursing and patient care.
