Midnight crash
Shortly before 12 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21, five youths were injured after the car they were in hit a tree head-on. According to the report by Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy Kevin Dennison, 18 year-old Benjamin Clifford of Edgecomb was operating a 2000 Toyota Camry west on the Wawenock Road in Edgecomb when he lost control and struck the tree. Both air bags deployed on impact.
“A preliminary investigation indicates that none of them were wearing seatbelts,” Dennison said.
Injuries among the youths ranged from moderate to slight. One passenger was transported to St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor and the four remaining youths were sent to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
Passengers in the car were Spencer Callahan, 19, of Edgecomb; David Clifford, 19, of Edgecomb; a female, 17, of Boothbay Harbor; and a male, 15, from Boothbay. The driver sustained cuts and bruises to his arms and passengers complained of arm, neck and leg pains. There were no life-threatening injuries.
Emergency Medical Service personnel from Boothbay, Central Lincoln County and Wiscasset, the Edgecomb Fire Department and Lincoln County Sheriff's deputies all arrived at the scene.
“At this point it doesn't appear that any of them were under the influence (of drugs or alcohol),” Dennison said. He said the accident is currently under investigation.
Emergency services personnel cleared the scene at about 1:30 a.m.
