The barn at Morris Farm is once again filling up with a huge selection of heirloom tomatoes, hardy Maine-grown perennials, vegetable and flower seedlings, and herbs for the farm’s annual plant sale this Saturday, May 19 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
The sale features a wide variety of locally-grown perennials, hardened off and ready for planting: Black-Eyed Susan, Phlox, Bee Balm, Columbine, Lupine, Ladies Mantle, Iris, Poppies, Hosta, Geraniums, Day Lilies, Iris, Rhubarb, to name just a few. A selection of heirloom Dahlias will be on sale, along with some gorgeous red Dahlias grown year after year in a local garden.
There will be 18 varieties of heirloom tomato seedlings available this year, most of which are not available unless you grow them yourself. Slicing tomatoes can be found in all colors: Aunt Ruby’s Green, Black Krim, Black Prince, Cherokee Purple, Cosmonaut Volkov, Garden Peach, German Johnson, Giant Belgium, Mortgage Lifter, Pineapple, Paul Robeson, Principe Borghese, and Rose De Berne. Descriptions of all the tomatoes will be available to help home gardeners choose the perfect combinations for salads, slicing, and snacking. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions about the plants and their care. All proceeds from the sale benefit the Morris Farm’s education programs.
Coffee and baked goods will be sold in the Morris Farm Store, where you will find a selection of locally produced vegetables, meat, dairy products and canned goods.
