Nancie Atwell has been in demand
Nancie Atwell, founder of Edgecomb’s Center for Teaching and Learning and the inaugural winner of the Global Teacher Prize, has had a busy fall.
In September, she spoke at the annual Clinton Global Initiative in New York City. Introduced by Fareed Zakaria of CNN, she addressed the need for collections of accessible, inviting children’s literature in every classroom in the world, students’ choice of books, and time in school to read them as essential conditions for literacy achievement. The text of her speech appears on “The Answer Sheet,” a Washington Post blog by educational writer Valerie Strauss, as well as at Facebook.
In October, Atwell presented at the first annual SOLVE conference at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her topic was the de-professionalization of the teaching profession as a result of today’s corporate reform movement. Afterwards, participants generated solutions to problems of low teacher morale, high rates of attrition, teacher shortages, and a lack of meaningful professional development.
In early November, Atwell will travel to London to do media events for the Varkey Foundation, which sponsors the million-dollar teacher award, and to help select the top ten finalists for the 2016 Global Teacher Prize.
