Night’s storms keep crews busy on roads, take power out for Westport Island
UPDATE: As of 5:26 a.m. Thursday, CMP’s website was still reporting all 626 of its Westport Island customers were without power.
Original post: National Weather Service’s warning Wednesday night of severe thunderstorms bore out, as downed trees and wires kept area police and fire departments busy. And as of 11:30 p.m., power was out for all of Central Maine Power’s Westport Island customers, according to cmpco.com
Wiscasset Police Department reported on its Facebook page, a tree was down blocking the roadway on the S turn before Westport Island Bridge. “Fire crews are working to reopen one lane. It could be sometime before CMP can respond to clear the entire roadway and restore power. Please use caution if traveling to and from the island,” the post read. An update around 10 p.m. stated, “There is a power line down in the same area and it will be quite a while before CMP can come out. The lane leading onto the island is passable but please watch for the low hanging wire.”
Alna Volunteer Fire Department also reported via Facebook, the department had three calls for downed trees. “Two were early during the torrential downpour around (6 p.m.) The last was later, around (10:30 p.m.) Two of the three were cleared easily as no wires were involved. The other caused Route 218 to be shut down till CMP could clear the wire from the tree. Six to 10 members responded to the widely spaced calls.”
