Plans change for venue of Alna special town meeting
Alna will meet at the fire station, not the meetinghouse, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 12 for a special town meeting. The town updated local news media via email Sunday. Selectmen said May 8 and May 30, they planned to have it at the 1789 meetinghouse.
June 3, the Wiscasset Newspaper asked again about the location since the warrant the board signed May 30 listed the fire station. At the time, Second Selectman Doug Baston still expected it to be held at the meetinghouse.
In an email response to questions from the Wiscasset Newspaper Sunday, First Selectman Melissa Spinney explained, "The meeting was originally scheduled for (the) fire station and that’s what was on (the) warrant. Beth (Whitney) suggested we have it at (the) meetinghouse, which we were going to try to do.
"After talking to Doreen (Conboy, volunteer archivist), who said it might be darkish in there and (constable) Chris Cooper, who said since it’s posted as fire station we would have to start it there and vote to adjourn to (the) meetinghouse, it made sense to just have it at (the) fire station."
Voters are set to consider setting taxes after July 15, with 90 interest-free days to pay; tapping cable franchise fees to match a possible ConnectME grant; and shifting the use of the money the town gets for the former town office.
The board will meet at the fire station at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sunday's email to reporters stated.
