Possible explosive device closes Woolwich Town Office and park
The Woolwich Town Office was closed and evacuated Thursday morning, July 7, after what appeared to be a possible explosive device was discovered at Nequasset Park, Selectmen’s Chairman David King Sr. said.
King telephoned the newspaper at 11:15 a.m., saying the Maine State Police were notified and had dispatched a Bombs/Explosive team to investigate.
King said as a precaution the municipal building had been evacuated and closed. Nequasset Road and a portion of George Wright Road were also shut down to traffic.
The device was discovered at the park and reported this morning to Fire Chief Mike Demers, King said. Demers sent a picture of the device to State Police in Augusta; the park was closed and the municipal building evacuated, King said.
“The fire chief told me it looked to be a homemade device,” King added. “It might turn out to be a hoax but in this day and age you can’t take any chances. It’s better to err on the side of caution.”
The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office was on the scene, King said.
No further information was immediately available.
