Public safety agencies carry Special Olympics torch through towns

The Boothbay Region team of Boothbay Harbor and Wiscasset police departments, Lincoln County Sheriff's Department and Two Bridges Regional Jail carried the torch for the 49th annual Maine Special Olympics Summer Games from Newcastle to Edgecomb and through Wiscasset June 6, said Boothbay Harbor Police Department Adminstrative Assistant Maureen Smith.
Smith heads up the leg of the run from Camden to West Bath.
In emails, she said the support vehicle was Country Coach Charters, whose Darcy Knoff and Doreen Moody, “have been a huge asset to the run for the past six years, giving the runners a place to rest if needed.” Midcoast Credit Union in Edgecomb and Sarah's Café in Wiscasset have put on the reception for the runners for at least 15 years, Smith added.
The statewide run with the torch, or Flame of Hope, seeks to raise funds for, and awareness of, Special Olympics Maine. This year's, held June 8-10 at the University of Maine in Orono, was due to have nearly 1,500 athletes ages 8 to 88, according to a Special Olympics Maine press release.
