Local history buffs will appreciate this house and its location. The house dates back to 1876 as confirmed by the original deed on display inside the home. Master boatbuilder, Cecil Pierce, was born in this house on Dec. 27, 1906, back when the property on which it sits stretched from one end of the cove that touches its shore to the other – a body of water that still retains the name Pierce Cove.

The house and much of the acreage was eventually purchased by the Lunt family and the strip of land that lies between the road and the water’s edge now supports at least five separate homes. The current owners purchased the original house in July 1971 from a John and Jane Cooper who sold it completely furnished. Papers were signed at 11 a.m. and by 1 p.m. that afternoon the new owners were entertaining friends who had arrived by boat to their shore!

As was the style of the day, the original front door faces the water rather than the street. The door opens onto an intimate brick terrace and stone steps that direct the way across sloping lawns to the dock that provides access to the ever-changing water of the sleepy cove. When inside, look for the Monhegan Island to Cape Elizabeth nautical chart upon which likenesses of the family’s boats had been lovingly painted, years ago, by family friend, Tommy Verdin.

The 2019 BRGC Home and Garden Tour, Friday, July 19, features homes in the harbor and on Southport. Tickets are $30 prepaid and $35 the day of the tour. Only cash or checks will be accepted for payment.
