Red’s is open
First come the Red Sox.
Then come the red Wiscasset High School jerseys.
Then comes Red's Eats.
Every spring in Wiscasset since 1977 has been marked with the opening of the popular landmark eatery next to Route 1 on Main Street Wiscasset.
This year, after a long and snowy winter, owner Debbie Gagnon said she was happy to open the eatery for the first time Monday, April 20.
“We are very excited to be open,” she said as a crowd milled in the rain. “We all love what we do, and are just so excited to be open again.”
Every year Red's sells more than 10 tons of lobster meat on a roll. The restaurant has been featured on numerous television shows and in print.
In true Red's fashion, there was a line waiting for the doors to open for the first time Monday, Gagnon said. In the summer, it’s not uncommon to see a line that wraps around the block for lobster rolls.
With customers sprouting like crocuses and warm weather approaching, the time was right to be open, Gagnon said.
“It's an indication of spring,” she said. “I just wish it was sunny.”
