Richardson: Property tax rate likely headed down
It was unknown by how much, since voters still have the town budget to decide piece by piece June 19 and the school budget June 8, but as proposed, Westport Island’s property tax rate should drop, First Selectman George Richardson said Monday night.
In the board’s UberConference call, Richardson said the municipal budget voters face at town meeting, 9 a.m. June 19 at town hall, would raise about $31,000 less this year. “And we’re probably going to be coming up with over $2 million in new assessment. So I think you can see a drop” in the rate, he said. “Does that make everyone happy?”
“Certainly does,” Second Selectman Gerald Bodmer said.
Under the proposed Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit budget facing a district-wide vote at the polls June 8, Westport Island’s tab would rise 2.5%, to $861,847. And according to information town staff provided, the county tax is $317,099, up from last year’s $307,497.
Besides the school budget, voters June 8 will pick a new second selectman for three years. Bailey Bartlett and Jeff Tarbox are on the ballot. Mary Coventry is unopposed for a three-year term on the SVRSU board. And no one filed papers for a two-year term on the SVRSU board, Town Clerk Julie Casson has said. Polls are open at town hall from noon to 6 p.m.
The board approved the June 19 town meeting warrant. It includes the final, $28,201 payment on a fire truck and the final, $144,552 one on the first phase of a long term paving project. Voters will also consider making credit cards an option for transactions with the town, for a $1 fee on items under $40 or 2.5% if over $40, according to the warrant.
Also Monday, selectmen thanked the broadband and cable committee for all its work toward last week’s winning, $225,542 ConnectME grant. “They did a great job,” Richardson said. And the board approved Midcoast Humane’s contract. Richardson said it was up about $107 this year, to $1,041.
