Robert L. Ervin
Robert L. ‘Bob’ Ervin, 79, of Saco passed away after suffering a stroke on Sept. 5, 2024 at Seal Rock Healthcare Center in Saco, Maine.
Born in Rockland, June 17, 1945, he was the son of Berton L. and Louise K. Ervin. He grew up in Wiley’s Corner St. George and was a member of the last class to graduate from St. George High School in 1963. After graduation, he worked at Clark Island Quarry, then at Marine Colloids, before attending the Police Academy and becoming a Maine State Trooper.
Bob began at the academy on June 16, 1968, as a member of the 26th Training Troop. After academy, he was assigned to Troop D. He covered the Belfast area at first, then later transferred to the Boothbay patrol. Bob was once named Trooper of the Year and received commendations for his service. There always seemed to be a letter on the bulletin board at the barracks from people that he had helped in their time of need. Bob retired on July 1, 1993, with the rank of Corporal. After retirement, he worked for Brown Brothers Lobster as security for many years. Bob was also a Master Mason who belonged to the Scottish Rite and to Kora Shrine.
Bob was a fun guy who always had a story or joke. He enjoyed telling his grandchildren about the highlights of his trooper days and how much inflation has gone up since his $82 paychecks in 1968. He liked to tell jokes that made the recipient stop and think before they got it. He almost enjoyed watching his friends and family trying to figure out the punchline more than the joke itself. Bob also enjoyed helping people and checking up on them.
Predeceased by his son Marty, his father Berton, and his nephew Kurt, Bob is survived by his daughter Traci (Kurt), his grandchildren Grace and Ricky; his mother Louise; his sisters, Linda (Jim) and Debbie (Bernie); his nieces Rachel (Doug) and their children Keagen, Calvin, Killian, and Colin; Katy (Gary) and their child Makayla; his nephew Kurt’s widow Katie Lynne and their children Brady and Justin; his maternal aunt Alice Kinney Frye, and many cousins.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, Rockland.
