Route One, Woolwich crash kills local couple Saturday
A Woolwich husband and wife have died as a result of a crash on Woolwich’s Route One on Saturday evening.
At 6:07 p.m. Jan. 21, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an accident involving three vehicles, between the Taste of Maine restaurant and George Wright Road. A 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe traveling north on Route One veered into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe that was traveling south. A 2013 Ford Explorer also traveling south was unable to avoid the collision and struck the Tahoe.
The driver of the Hyundai, Robert S. Martin, 70, died at the scene. A passenger, Carolyn W. Martin, 76, was transported on a Life Flight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where she was pronounced dead.
The Tahoe’s driver was Danielle Ward, 33, of Rockport. There were seven minor children in the vehicle. Ward and three children were transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
The Ford Explorer’s driver was William Kring, 63 of Dudley, Massachusetts. Neither Kring nor his passenger sustained injuries.
Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said, “This was an unfortunate accident that resulted in the death of a local elderly couple. Our condolences go out to their family. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.”
The accident remains under investigation and it could be several days before deputies can piece together the actions that caused the accident.
The accident is being investigated by Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Carlton. Brunswick police are assisting him in the reconstruction.
