Sarah A. Addicott
Sarah Ann “Sally” Addicott, 86, passed away peacefully with her son present on Aug. 28, 2024 at Neffsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Home, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
She was born on Dec. 7, 1937, in Lancaster, PA, to Harold and Ann Ebersole. She is survived by her son, Leslie, grandson, Ethan, a younger brother, David Ebersole (Freidlinde Ebersole) of Brethren Village, two nephews and two great nephews.
Sally graduated from Lancaster McCaskey High School in 1955, and Juniata College in 1959, with a BA in education. She began her teaching career at Rothsville Elementary School, where she had several Amish children in her classes. In 1963, she moved to Pasadena, California, and took a kindergarten teaching position with the El Monte School District in East Los Angeles, a stark contrast to Rothsville.
Sally married James W. Addicott in 1970, and in 1973, gave birth to her only son, Leslie. In 1978, she moved with her son to Lancaster, PA, where she was hired as the executive director of the Lancaster Day Care Center on S. Queen Street (now the Lancaster Early Education Center). During the decade of the 1980s, she modernized the building and expanded services to include infant care. She obtained her MS in education from Temple University in 1982.
In 1992, Sally moved to Southport Island, Maine, when she was hired by the Boothbay Region School District as an elementary special education teacher. She retired in 2004, and returned to Lancaster to be closer to family.
Sally was a devout Episcopalian and was a member at St. Columba’s in Boothbay Harbor and at St. Thomas in Camden, Maine. She was the wedding coordinator for All Saints By-The-Sea summer chapel on Southport Island, in the late 1990s.
Sally loved living in Maine, her Labrador retrievers, Penn State football, and spending time with her grandson most of all. She was an avid reader of all kinds of books. She will be remembered for her profound love and concern for children, her service to the church, and her persistent love for those closest to her.
A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Lancaster, PA, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20.
Please send flowers to the Rosemont unit at Neffsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Home, 2829 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601, and any donations to the Lancaster Early Education Center, 150 S. Queen St., Lancaster, PA 17603.
