Snowfall totals for 2013-2014
With three winter storms pounding the region over the past week, it seems 2014 has been the winter with no end.
To some degree, that's correct.
Before the first flakes fell, the Old Farmer's Almanac predicted a snowy year, specifically with heavy amounts before Super Bowl Sunday and snow blanketing the northeast for most of the winter.
While snow has fallen at a good clip, Maine is still behind last year when it comes to totals.
For the 2013-14 season, the National Weather Service in Gray has reported 76.8 inches of the white stuff for the year (note: all reported snowfall comes from the Portland area, where data is available).
Last year, the total at the end of the year was more than 98 inches of snow from July 2012 to June 2013. That was nearly three-feet more than than the usual 60 inches that typically fall in Portland.
On February 8, 2013 only 35 inches of snow had been reported in the Portland area; the storm nicknamed Nemo, which featured several feet of snow in some areas, boosted that total considerably.
