Dear Editor:

I am writing in support of Senator Chloe Maxmin's Pine Tree Amendment, legislative bill LD489. This important bill would establish that Maine citizens have an inherent and inalienable right to clean air, water, and a healthy environment. It will help guarantee the Maine state government serve as a trustee of our natural resources, and will insure that the state faithfully operates to conserve, protect, and maintain these vital resources for present and future generations.

Similar amendments have been passed in Montana and Pennsylvania after receiving a broad range of support from community groups and business interests, in part because it makes strong economic sense.

Maine's tourism based economy is the second best jobs creator in the state; keeping Maine's environment clean helps protect these jobs, prevent costly pollution clean ups, and avoid lengthy litigation.

Please call your state legislature representatives and express your support for the Pine Tree Amendment.
