Survey, energy project on tap for school committee
The Wiscasset School Committee’s decision on a $1.7 million energy project remained on track for Thursday night, Dec. 15, Superintendent of Schools Heather Wilmot said Monday. The meeting in the Wiscasset Middle High School library starts at 6 p.m.
The committee was also set to hear results of Wilmot’s second annual community budget survey and revisit the panel’s policy for the contingency fund. Vice Chairman Glen Craig recently took issue with requiring a unanimous vote to tap the fund.
Regarding the energy project, Wilmot said she was excited for the opportunity to address buildings’ needs and make a better environment for students, and excited to be reaching the contract vote after a 13-month process. “It’s been a lot of hard work both on communication and development to get to this point,” she said.
Wilmot credited Maintenance and Transportation Director John Merry for identifying the buildings’ needs and working with Siemens of Scarborough to improve the space for children and get the most energy savings out of the project.
Selectmen recently criticized plans for the contract vote to be held without a prior town-wide vote. Wilmot has said the process was following state laws for how school departments carry out energy projects. Asked for any comment on the Dec. 6 meeting, Wilmot said she appreciated the opportunity to address the select board and provide them with information on the project.
Also on Thursday night’s agenda is the budget survey that closed Monday. In preliminary results Wilmot provided Tuesday, 142 people took part this year, up six from 2015. Participants again ranked “range and variety of programming” as their highest priority; instructional materials and extracurricular activities both grew in importance.
Regarding the department’s early release days, Wilmot said most respondents appreciated the reminder texts and emails; 46 percent said the twice-a-month model worked well and 25 percent had no opinion.
The committee has three executive, or closed-door, sessions planned, on Wilmot’s evaluation, a possible student expulsion and staff negotiations.
