Tending the garden at Story Time in Wiscasset
Getting the children curious about gardening wasn’t hard to do after reading “The Curious Garden” by Peter Brown at this week’s storytime hour.
By starting a small garden in an abandoned area of a gray and dreary city, Liam, the boy in the story, manages to create a desire for others to garden and make their city green and bright. The garden spreads to very curious areas of the city, too, for example, railroad tracks, old cars and street signs are soon decorated with green living beauty.
With that inspiration, the children at the Wiscasset Public Library started with a recycled egg carton and filled the compartments with rich potting soil.
Next, they carefully placed a seed of marigold or morning glory in each batch of soil. They will be monitoring the seedlings’ growth and keeping their new garden watered in the sun at their own homes. We look forward to meeting next week to discuss everyone’s garden progress!
Story Time takes place each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and all are welcome.
