Timber frame construction workshop for high school students
Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson is offering a great opportunity for high school students (ages 13-19) to participate in a timber frame construction workshop July 17-20.
Each year HVNC hosts three timber frame classes in which eight students work under the guidance of professionals to turn standing trees into complete frame in just four days.
High school students will have an opportunity to do exactly the same.
Timber frame construction, also called post and beam, is a traditional New England building styles that uses precisely cut joints to hold timbers in place rather than relying on nails and screws. Large exposed beams create an aesthetically beautiful building, as well as one that is able to withstand the test of time.
Thanks to the generosity of several foundations, Hancock Lumber, Wood-mizer sawmills, Stihl chainsaws and support from the Maine Organic Farmers Gardeners Association, tuition for this class is only $100. Tuition includes instruction, tool use, lunch each day, and a cookout at the end of class. This is not an overnight camp, but HVNC does have several rustic camping opportunities.
There is a competitive application process, including letters of reference. Application materials are available online at www.hvnc.org/registration, and need to be returned to HVNC by June 16. Successful applicants will display maturity, an interest in hand-on learning, and the ability and desire to work hard.
