Trunk or Treat to craft fair, EES sixth graders prepare for annual spring trip to Boston
A graduation trip to Boston has been a tradition for Edgecomb Eddy School sixth graders for as long as anyone can remember. This year they have a higher than usual fundraising goal, because they plan on staying overnight in BeanTown. Efforts to raise the extra funds have already begun.
In the old days, a year of fundraising used to culminate in barely seven hours of activities for more than seven and a half hours of train ride. To get more bang for their donated dollars, last year was the first time teachers Kate Race and Laurie Brown dared to try for an overnight. With only nine students, it was a great time to see if they could pull it off.
Dorm rooms at Boston University gave the kids a taste of college life, while being a cheaper alternative to hotels. The first day there, students visited the New England Aquarium, then took a Duck Boat Tour through the city and into the Charles River. They navigated the “T” back to the dorms and walked across the street to Fenway Park and an evening Red Sox game. They were even televised on the JumboTron!
The next morning they went to the Museum of Science and the Omni Theater for hours of learning and experiments. They walked to Faneuil Hall, then had a guided tour of the historical Freedom Trail. By the time they boarded the Amtrak for Brunswick, they were exhausted, but the memories of the two days together will last a lifetime.
This year, the 14 students started fundraising before the school year even began, with a car wash hosted by the Edgecomb Fire Department. The next event is Trunk-or-Treat this Friday, Nov. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the school. While the Parent-Teacher Club will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair, sixth graders and parents will offer crockpot entrees and baked goods for donations. After browsing books and trunks, plunge your hand into a bowl of eyeballs in the Haunted Hallway and get a Poloroid at the Phantom Photo Booth.
Their next public offering will be at the Edgecomb Fire Department Fish Fry on Sat., Nov. 9, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The sixth graders will host a bake sale.
After that, our biggest fundraising event yet will be at the Edgecomb Eddy Artisan and Vendor Show at EES on Sat., Dec. 7, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. There will be over 40 local artists, crafters, and vendors in the gymnasium selling their wares, just in time for the holidays. A raffle will add to the fun.
If you have any questions or would like to make a donation, please contact Laurie Brown at Edgecomb Eddy School 882-5515.
The Edgecomb Eddy 6th graders would like to extend their thanks to the many local businesses and community organizations who have supported their fundraising efforts this year and all the years prior!
