UC at Bath/Brunswick offers university programs for educators
Educators and potential educators can choose from a variety of teacher preparation programs and courses offered at University College at Bath/Brunswick for the fall 2014 semester, which begins in September. Courses are taught by University of Maine System instructors at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Programs range from an undergraduate certificate in Special Education from the University of Maine at Fort Kent to a Master of Science in Adult and Higher Education from the University of Southern Maine. Students who wish to earn teacher certification can enroll in Elementary, Secondary and Special Education program pathways.
This fall instructor Patricia Clark will offer University of Maine at Augusta’s HUS 362/PSY 362 Language and Literacy in Early Childhood on Mondays from 4 to 6:45 p.m. via videoconference from Brunswick this fall. This course is designed to provide environmental strategies to support early literacy development including early experiences with books and writing. Notes Clark, “It is crucial that we talk and read to babies from birth. We will study children’s books and ways to encourage reading in the primary years.” The course meets the Maine DOE requirements for language development and early literacy for endorsement 081 Early Childhood Teacher, and early literacy for endorsement 029 Early Elementary Teacher.
Patricia Clark, who received her M.S. in exceptionality through the University of Southern Maine and advanced degrees in early intervention and special education from UMaine, came to the University of Maine at Augusta as an instructor in 2001 after a career that ranged from editing a weekly newspaper to nearly two decades as a kindergarten teacher. At UMA she teaches a wide range of courses, including early childhood, special education, human services, and psychology. Many of her classes can be applied toward state certifications.
Most education courses are delivered online. Students without high-speed internet access can participate in the courses at University College’s well-equipped computer lab. Staff at the center offer support to all students who are new to online learning.
Recent UMA graduate Vanessa Fitch says, “Best college experience – the staff, teachers, and classes worked around my schedule. It was affordable and I would recommend this route to anyone looking into going to college or just interested in taking a few classes!”
UCBB will move to Brunswick Landing on August 22 and open for fall classes starting on September 2. Our center will be housed on the new Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Midcoast Campus in a first floor wing of Orion Hall, 12 Sewall Street, Brunswick.
Registration for fall 2014 is open and ongoing. Potential students are encouraged to call 442-7736 to schedule an advising session at the Center to discuss degree selection, credit transfer, financial aid and more.
