United Way Campaign successful
United Way of Mid Coast Maine’s 2021 fall campaign reached its $1,725,000 goal, Campaign Co-Chairs Bob and Barb McCue announced Wednesday, Nov. 10.
“The total results are $1,738,227,” said Barb McCue at the organization’s Finale, held outdoors at Flight Deck Brewing. “This is such great news for so many people. Thank you to a very generous Midcoast community! Thank you to every single person who gave.”
United Way donations fund community initiatives and vital services at 36 local partner agencies that provide residents of Lincoln and Sagadahoc counties, Brunswick and Harpswell, with food, health and dental care, volunteer matches for isolated seniors, Big Brothers and Big Sisters for adolescents, support for people with disabilities, child abuse prevention, home visiting for new parents, high-quality child care, and much more.
The Campaign Co-Chairs stressed that announced results include additional giving expected before the end of the calendar year. “Our message for people who haven’t given yet is: remember, we’re counting on you to reach this projected total! If you’ve never given before, it’s not too late. We need to raise every dollar we can, so we can help all the people we can.”
Everyone can still give by going online at www.uwmcm.org/donate, texting DONATE2UW to 41444, or sending a donation to United Way at 34 Wing Farm Parkway, Bath ME 04530.
Over 60 community leaders and volunteers attended the event celebrating the Campaign. The McCues thanked the volunteer Campaign Cabinet, Loaned Executives, United Way Campaign Director Tom Blatz of Wiscasset and the rest of the United Way staff who organized and led the campaign. The theme this year was “ReUnited for a Better Tomorrow!”
Campaign Division Awards went to STARC Systems (Commerce & Industry Division), Riley Insurance (Financial and Professional Firms Division), Mid Coast-Parkview Health (Health Care Division), and Family Focus (Public Service Division). Additional great campaigns were held at Bowdoin College, LincolnHealth, L.L.Bean, FHC, Woodex, Hannaford, and many other workplaces.
The overall Campaign Excellence Award went to Bath Savings. An employee team made the campaign fun, including goodie bags delivered to each branch before their virtual rally, an online scavenger hunt to learn more about United Way’s work, and a company pledge to match new and increased employee giving. Combined employee and corporate giving climbed to over $100,000, and over 90% of employees participated. “Bath Savings had an amazing campaign. We are so grateful for all you have done,” said Campaign Chair Bob McCue in presenting the Award to a Bath Savings team including co-chairs Megan Smith-Pinkham, Dan Wilson, and Jessica McIntire.
Bath Iron Works employees also received special thanks from United Way’s Co-chairs for being once again “the backbone” of United Way’s campaign. Bob McCue thanked the BIW volunteer team including co-chairs Stephanie Therrien and Jon Pelletier, and all the thousands of employees. Together with retirees and the BIW corporate gift, they donated close to $500,000 to the Campaign.
Scott Zamer, CFO of Bath Iron Works, received United Way’s Volunteer of the Year Award. McCue noted that the previous year, because of Covid, United Way had not been able to go into BIW for employee rallies and had greatly missed that in-person connection with its largest partner. “This year, Scott was determined to do an even better job reaching the thousands of BIW employees with United Way’s message,” McCue said, praising Zamer for starting early, assembling a great team, personally participating in planning meetings, making sure departments scheduled a United Way presentation, and making the United Way pitch himself at some of these meetings.
“He talked from the heart about the challenges some of their own coworkers were facing, and how they could help,” said McCue, noting that Scott was an effective ambassador in part due to the work he has done on United Way’s finance committee and Board. “Scott is an example of the difference one person’s leadership can make,” said McCue in presenting the Volunteer of the Year Award.
In addition to Bob and Barb McCue, members of the 2021 Campaign Cabinet include: Mara Pennell of Bath Savings, Stephanie Therrien and Jon Pelletier of BIW, Sam Chard and Cindy Tucci of L.L. Bean, Steve Bailey of the Maine School Management Association, Karry Kane of Norway Savings Bank, Barbara Tuttle of Bath Savings, Kelly Creamer of LincolnHealth, Jon Larssen of Mid Coast-Parkview Health, and Chris Szalay of SEARCH.
This year’s Loaned Executives, who worked full-time on the campaign, include: Tara McCannell of L.L. Bean, Nina Bergendoff, and Denise White.
