Welcoming the seventh and eighth graders to WHS
At the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year, things will be a little different in Wiscasset. The primary school students will be located at the middle school, and middle school students in grades 7 and 8 will be taught at the high school.
“This is a big change for these students,” teacher and student council adviser Deb Pooler said. “The student council decided it was their job to help them get ready for the transition.”
Every Monday, the middle school has a morning assembly. Principal Bruce Scally invited Pooler and the student council down to the assembly to teach the students the WHS school song.
“The students at the middle school were quiet at first,” Pooler said. “So we've kept coming every Monday morning and taught them both the school song and the 'We are small but we are mighty' and they've gotten louder and more enthusiastic. It's a big difference from a few weeks ago.”
Pooler said the dedication of the student council “amazes” her.
“I wasn't sure if anybody would even show up, 7:45 a.m. on a Monday morning, but they all came. We are a small school but so many of the students here are special.”
Student council members feel it's important to welcome the 7th and 8th grade students who will be attending WHS. There has already been some discussion about involving the younger grades in activities such as the Winter Carnival.
“We will be stronger, our voice will be stronger with the 7th and 8th graders here,” Pooler said. “And it might help our enrollment because students who have already been at the school for these two years will probably elect to stay for high school.”
