‘Wellness U’ explores many aspects of health
If you’re making a New Year’s resolution to get healthier in 2015, you may want to clear your calendar for Jan. 10.
Wiscasset Parks & Recreation, Wiscasset Ambulance Service and other partners are coming together for the first local “Wellness U,” a day of classes, health screenings and talks to better equip anyone on the path to fitness.
Kickboxing, zumba and other classes in and out of the pool will all be free to try, as will the discussions on smoking cessation, nutrition for diabetes, the winter blues and other topics. Child care will be provided, said Bob MacDonald, program and facilities manager for the recreation department.
Among staff members scheduled to take part in Wellness U is the center’s personal trainer Cedric Maguire. He’s looking forward to the event.
“It’s fantastic. It’ll be great to have a lot of different organizations coming together to help people,” Maguire said, as he worked with members who were exercising Sunday afternoon.
During Wellness U, Maguire plans to give orientations on the fitness equipment and the individual and group training the center offers. Other activities scheduled include youth dental screenings by Lincoln County Dental and blood pressure screenings by Wiscasset Ambulance Service.
“I’m hoping for a good turnout,” Wiscasset Ambulance Service Director Roland Abbott said Dec. 26.
MacDonald has done a good job of organizing the event, Abbott added.
Other partners include Lincoln County Healthcare and MaineHealth; Healthy Lincoln County; Sheepscot Bay Physical Therapy; Sweetser; and Power Up Business Solutions.
Plans call for the center to hold Wellness U’s quarterly, with the second one eyed for April.
MacDonald said the January one should be good timing for those looking to keep their New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, quit smoking or otherwise improve their health.
“People are going to be looking for something to keep those endeavors going in the right direction.”
But the part of the day he’s most excited about comes at 11:45 a.m., MacDonald said. That’s when all activities in the building will pause so that everyone can attend a session on hands-only CPR.
“It’s an amazing, life-saving skill,” MacDonald said about the procedure. Wiscasset Ambulance Service will lead the session.
Wellness U will run from 7:30 a.m. to about 2:45 p.m., MacDonald said. During the event, the center will offer a 15 percent discount on membership, he said.
