Westport Column: Clams, clean-up, chowder and more
Hello friends and neighbors!
May is here! We welcome the forsythia and daffodils and look forward to the tulips and hyacinth. With goldfinch and robins strutting about, the hummingbirds can’t be far behind. Mother Earth is doing her best to paint us a beautiful landscape to enjoy very soon.
Attention all clam diggers: Shellfish licenses for the 2017-18 season are on sale now at the town clerk’s office. Everyone who digs for clams must have a license. If you happen to be 12 years of age or younger or 65 years of age or older, the license is free. All other resident recreational licenses are $15 and are good through April 30, 2018 for up to one peck of clams each day. Happy clamming!
Thanks to all the folks who helped out with last weekend’s island clean up. Road sides are looking a lot better; let’s keep it that way. Special kudos to Nancy Shaul for going over and above the call of duty! Her diligent efforts were unmatched!
The Westport Community Association (WCA) sponsored another fun, successful Chowder and Trivia Night last weekend. Eight delicious entries resulted in two winners: Laurie Jaramillo for her seafood entry and Carolyn Schafer for her sweet potato selection. Erin Bailey followed up with a rousing game of trivia among six competitive teams with lots of laughs ensuing. It is fair to say a good time was had by all!
The next WCA event is a community concert planned for Sunday, May 21 at 3 p.m. in the historic church. Alison Lee Freeman and the Shipmates (Charlie Ipcar, Liz Lannon, Chris Lannon) will tell stories about life at sea with humor and musical harmonies accompanied by guitar, fiddle, banjo and mandolin. Mark your calendars for this entertaining afternoon!
