Wilmot, town budget committee review draft
Wiscasset Budget Committee Chairman Bob Blagden said the panel reviewed the school department’s 2017-18 budget draft with Superintendent of Schools Heather Wilmot Friday night, but took no vote because the school committee has not finalized the proposal yet.
The school committee plans to vote April 27, at its monthly business meeting that starts at 6 p.m. in the Wiscasset Middle High School library.
In an email response to the Wiscasset Newspaper on Saturday, Wilmot wrote she appreciated the opportunity to present the draft to the budget committee Friday. “The members of the group posed thoughtful questions and we engaged in an informative and productive dialogue.”
No date has been set for the budget committee’s vote on the school budget, but it will likely be scheduled soon after the school committee votes, Blagden said.
Wilmot said the draft reviewed Friday was the same version the school committee looked at April 10, totaling $9.5 million. Barring any changes, the budget would be up six percent over this year’s and, with revenues figured in, require 1.3 percent more from local taxpayers, according to information Wilmot provided April 10.
The budget faces a tentative, 6 p.m. May 15 special town meeting in the WMHS gym and a vote at the polls June 13.
