Winter weather closes schools
Advisory in effect until Wednesday at 6 a.m.
It’s beginning to look a bit like winter. Let’s start with the closings:
Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor schools, Edgecomb Eddy School, Southport Central School, Center for Teaching and Learning; Lincoln Academy, Wiscasset schools, including Wiscasset-Christian Academy.
Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library and Wiscasset Public Library are also closed today.
The National Weather Service in Gray has this forecast for Portland and the Midcoast:
Today: Snow, mainly after 9 a.m. High near 29. North wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. Hazardous driving conditions today with snow intensifying this afternoon with 3-6” expected AND 1/10th inch of ice.
Accumulating snow begins this morning intensifying through the afternoon. Expect a transition to sleet and freezing rain this afternoon and tonight. Precipitation to end early tomorrow morning.
Tonight: Snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 2 a.m., then a chance of rain or freezing rain between 2 and 4 a.m., then a chance of rain. Temperature rising to around 37 by 5 a.m. North wind 10 to 15 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of rain before 8 a.m. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 50. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
High near 39. Chance of precipitation is 3o percent.
