Wiscasset finalizes school budget offer tonight
Wiscasset voters on Wednesday, May 14, will have their chance to alter or keep the School Committee’s $9.4 million school budget offer, before the proposal goes to the polls on June 10.
The 6 p.m. meeting at Wiscasset High School has a town meeting format; pieces of the budget will be taken up one by one.
The committee’s proposal would take an estimated $6.9 million in property taxes, a $1.8 million hike over the $5.1 million the town is paying for education in its final year in Regional School Unit 12. However, voters at a May 31 town meeting on the municipal budget will consider tapping the town’s reserve fund for as much as $1.25 million to offset most of the hit. That would pare a projected 27 percent tax hike down to 9.8 percent, Interim Town Manager Don Gerrish has said.
