Wiscasset middle schoolers honor service members
Wiscasset sixth through eighth graders gathered to honor service members, past, present and future Nov. 10. The American Legion was invited as well as service members from the students’ families and community.
To thank them. students created a bulletin board of stars with the names of people they knew who had served. They also wrote letters to service members in general thanking them for their service. Assistant Principal Warren Cossette asked each of the American Legion members present to introduce themselves including the branch of service in which they served and their rank. Then he told students, “These are our local heroes.”
Following the pledge of allegiance, Cossette asked those assembled what the word “indivisible” meant to them. A discussion took place on how the students are members of a community and working together was important for success.
Students got to thank service members important to them as the microphone was passed around. The assembly ended with American Legion member Tom Stoner explaining the significance of playing “Taps” and the bugle; then he played.
