WMHS 2023 ‘Top Scholars’
Wiscasset Middle High School is pleased to announce the four seniors in the Class of 2023 who have earned the distinction of being a “Top Scholar.” To be recognized as a “Top Scholar,” a senior must hold a cumulative (four-year) grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Carolyn Potter, valedictorian, has been a member of Chorus, the Yearbook Committee, and The National Honor Society, of which she was Vice President her senior year. She was elected Secretary of her freshman class and Vice President of her sophomore class. She has been on Student Council throughout high school, elected as Treasurer her junior year and Vice President senior year.
Potter played soccer for four years, captaining the team her junior and senior years. As a member of the Swim Team for four years, she was also captain her sophomore, junior and senior years. She also played softball for Wiscasset for three years.
In 2022, she was nominated for the St. Michael’s College Book Award for her academic achievement and sustained and sincere commitment to community service. She was also recognized as Student of the Semester at Bath Tech, attended Dirigo State and received the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Scholar Athlete Award. She received the Maine Principals Association Award in 2023 and is a junior firefighter. She will be attending Central Maine Community College for Criminal Justice. She is the daughter of Karen and Roy Potter of Edgecomb.
Madison Westrich, salutatorian, has had a distinguished career in music at WMHS. She sang in Chorus and played alto sax in Band, both for three years. She was a member of All State and District Honors Chorus and District Honors Band and Jazz Band. She was awarded the National School Choral Award in 2021 and 2022.
She was Secretary for her freshman class and Secretary for Student Council all four years. In 2021, Westrich attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference as a delegate, and in 2022, she participated in the Bigelow Laboratory Keller BLOOM Program. She received the Wesleyan College Book Award for her rigorous course of study and for being a visible member of her school and community. She has been an Honors Biology Teacher’s Aide and will receive a STEM enforcement on her diploma. She is a member of the National Honor Society.
Westrich also worked on the Yearbook Committee and Prom Committee, and volunteered as a photographer for the Athletics Department. She attended Dirigo State. Madison will be majoring in Biological Sciences at The University of New England. She is the daughter of Kim and Jeff Westrich of Wiscasset.
Cory Ricker played basketball for Wiscasset throughout high school, and was captain of the team junior and senior years. He also ran track sophomore year. He participated on the WMHS Math Team and was elected to the National Honor Society his junior and senior years. He was Vice President of his sophomore and senior classes and was a member of the Student Council throughout high school. Ricker plays the piano and has been a member of Chorus. He also worked on the Prom Committee junior year.
In 2022, he attended Dirigo State. He received the Williams College Book Award for demonstrating intellectual leadership and attended the University of Maine Cohen Leadership Institute. He has earned his black belt in Tae Kwon Do kickboxing. He will pursue a major in Business/Sports Management at The University of Maine at Orono. He is the son of Dale Ricker and Lisa Noyes of Westport Island.
McKayla King has been a member of the National Technical Honors Society for two years for her high achievement in Health Sciences at Bath Tech. King is licensed as a CNA. In 2022, she was recognized by the UMO chapter of the Society of Women Engineers for excelling in mathematics and the sciences during her high school years.
King will be attending Southern Maine Community College for Radiography and then will be transferring to continue her education in North Carolina. She is the daughter of Alton King III of Alna and Tamara Murphy of Bath.
