WMHS’ 6 ‘Top Scholars’
Wiscasset Middle High School stated in a press release July 11, the school is pleased to announce that six seniors in the Class of 2022 earned the distinction of being a “Top Scholar.” To be recognized as a “Top Scholar,” a senior must hold a cumulative (four years) grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Mason Davenport, valedictorian, is the son of Heather and William Davenport of Wiscasset. His many accomplishments at WMHS include earning the Rensselaer Medal for excelling in advanced math and science courses and the Cohen Emerging Leader Award (junior year) and certificates for outstanding achievement in mathematics and Principles of Democracy (senior year).
Davenport played soccer, tennis and track for Wiscasset and was elected to Student Council and National Honor Society. He was also active as a class officer, and a member of chorus and the Drama and Outing Clubs while at WHS. Davenport also volunteered at The Morris Farm.
In the fall, Davenport will attend The Earth and Climate Science Institute at University of Maine in Orono.
Naomi Wood, salutatorian, the daughter of Terry and Rodney Wood of Augusta, received the Smith College Book Award for academic achievement, leadership qualities and concern for others. Wood played on the soccer team, participated in One Acts, and was a member of Student Council for all four years of high school. Wood was also active musically, singing in All State Chorus and District 3 Chorus. Wood was a member of National Honor Society and Yearbook Committee.
Wood will attend University of Maine at Fort Kent to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice.
Brianna Colson, the daughter of Michele Colson and Derek Orr of Wiscasset, received the Wellesley Book Award for demonstrating intelligence, determination, motivation and achievement and achievement awards for AP English and AP American History (junior year). Senior year, Colson was presented with the Golden Goggles Award for four years of excellence in science and with a certificate for outstanding achievement in Principles of Democracy.
Colson played soccer and basketball, earning numerous awards throughout high school, including recognition by Mountain Valley Conference. Colson was a member of National Honor Society and Student Council, as well as Yearbook Committee and Outing Club. Colson had perfect attendance her freshman year.
Colson will attend University of New England in the fall to pursue a degree in Psychology with plans to become a pediatrician.
Ruby Cossaboon, the daughter of Maggi Cossaboon, received the UMO Society of Women Engineers Merit Award for excellence in math and science during her high school years. She was a member of Math Team and National Honor Society. Cossaboon swam for Wiscasset and participated in Drama Club as an actor, voice-over and sound technician. Cossaboon played bass in band and acoustic guitar in jazz band at her prior school during her freshman and sophomore years. Cossaboon also volunteered at Maine Art Gallery.
Cossaboon will attend University of Maine in Orono to pursue a degree in nursing.
Jasmine Rego, the daughter of Cynthia and Mark Rego of Alna, received the Williams College Book Award for intellectual leadership and contributing to the extra-curricular life of the school (junior year) and certificate for outstanding achievement in physical education (senior year). An avid athlete, Rego played soccer and softball and was a member of the track and cheerleading teams, receiving numerous awards throughout her years of high school.
Rego participated in the Teens to Trails Leadership Program and was a member of Student Council. Rego was an art student whose work was picked to be shown at Potland Museum of Art during Youth Week.
Rego will attend Unity College to earn a degree in conservation law enforcement/wildlife biology with a goal of becoming a biologist or game warden for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Evan Strong, the son of Tara and Isaac Strong of Wiscasset, was treasurer of National Honor Society this year. He also participated in Drama Club’s fall production and One Act performance. Strong volunteered as a street performer at Schoonerfest last summer and at The Morris Farm.
Strong will attend Husson University this fall and will major in audio engineering.
