WMHS makes up its winter carnival
“Let’s give it up for Mr. Clark and Mr. Wenckus,” Wiscasset Middle High School technology coordinator and student council adviser Deb Pooler said to cheers in Stover Auditorium Friday. The two teachers had just taken part in a classic WMHS contest, the pickle spit.
Recent snow days delayed, but did not stop tradition as students and staff filled the day with fun in and outside the school for the annual winter carnival.
It had been set for the Friday before February break; there was school, but with three days’ planning lost to snow days earlier in the week, students requested the postponement, Pooler explained.
Now the snow is mostly gone, so snow sculpting and downhill sledding didn’t happen, Pooler said. Dodge ball and the other outdoor games went on at the soccer field, which still had snow, she said.
For the midday portion of the carnival, grades nine through 12 were out of the wind and in the gym.
After the pickle spit, English teacher Cynthia Turcotte, who heads up students’ civil rights team, briefly addressed students and staff. Jokes and negative comments have been reduced in several areas including race, ethnicity and sexual orientation, she said. “You have created a school that is a much kinder, gentler place.” A recently announced 2017 EqualityMaine award reflected the efforts of the entire school, she said.
Then the grades rode and pushed scooters across the gym floor in the monkey scooter race and shot hoops in a three-point contest, before gathering to sit in front of the stage for the battle of the bands. Students swayed and shined lights in the dark as the sophomores covered Elvis Presley’s “Can’t help falling in love.”
Seniors, many in “Senior Night Live” shirts, won the carnival. The student council sponsors the event with funds the group raises for school spirit. The sponsorship also covered seniors’ catered lunch Friday; KFC in Brunswick delivered it, Pooler said.
“(The carnival) is an important tradition to our kids and I am so happy we could make it happen again this year,” Pooler said. It lets students and staff work together in good sportsmanship and school spirit, she added. “It really bonds us all together.”
