Woolwich accident’s other survivor recalls aftermath
Jennifer Blackwell has been having nightmares about the Woolwich accident that killed a Wiscasset man and injured her and a Boothbay teen.
The 25-year-old Brunswick woman was driving north to visit a friend in Wiscasset on February 11 before a series of collisions on Route 1 claimed the life of Walter Crosman, 45, and put Emma Leonard, 17, in a Portland hospital.
Blackwell, a nurse and single mother of two, said she received a concussion. A headache lasted nearly a week after the accident and more have continued to come and go, she said February 22. She expected to have further testing in connection with back, shoulder and neck pains.
She's started seeing a therapist to help her with the new anxiety she's been feeling while driving, she said.
All three drivers involved were traveling alone. On February 22, Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Anderson said the investigation was nearly complete. Everything continued to indicate that the accident occurred when Crosman, northbound in a jeep, made an illegal right-side pass of Blackwell's car; the jeep collided with the car then spun out of control and struck the front end of the southbound station wagon Leonard was driving, Anderson has said.
“It happened so fast. It was very scary,” Blackwell said. She said she had to kick her car door open to get out. Then she called 911 and went to check on those in the other vehicles. She couldn't get to Crosman; Leonard was unresponsive but had a pulse, Blackwell said.
“I held her hand and told her that she was going to be OK, people were coming and that she was going to be all right.” That's when Leonard began making sounds, Blackwell said.
Leonard continues to recover from her injuries, her father John Leonard has said. Blackwell has sent her flowers and has been exchanging messages with the teen's family via Facebook.
Blackwell hopes to meet with Leonard when the teen is up to it. In a recent interview with the Boothbay Register, John Leonard thanked Blackwell for holding his daughter's hand until emergency crews arrived.
