Woolwich considers ambulance purchase
Woolwich EMS is exploring the possibility of purchasing a surplus ambulance from Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue in Harpswell.
Julia Gillespie, acting EMS director, told the board of selectmen on Tuesday night, Sept. 8, that the ambulance for sale is a diesel-powered 2006 Ford TraumaHawk. She said the vehicle has approximately 33,000 miles on it and been well maintained with new rear tires. It would replace the town’s current ambulance, which has logged roughly 122,000 miles.
Selectmen agreed the ambulance was worth pursuing. Selectman Lloyd Coombs wanted to be certain the board drew monies for its purchase from the appropriate accounts.
The price of the ambulance was put at between $27,000 and $30,000. The board discussed using monies for its purchase from ambulance revenues with the balance coming from the emergency services vehicle replacement account. Town Administrator Lynette Eastman said there was $37,308 available in this account; funds could be drawn from here and replaced by the townspeople next May at the annual town meeting.
Acting Woolwich Fire Chief Domenic Maccio told selectmen he supported the ambulance purchase.
The board voted 4-1 (Selectman Dale Chadbourne dissenting), to allow Gillespie to look further into the ambulance purchase; they authorized her to make an offer of up to $30,000.
“I’m OK with purchasing the ambulance, but would prefer we get it for $27,000, the amount on (Gillespie’s) purchase order,” Chadbourne said afterward.
Chairman of the fire chief search committee Fred Kahrl said there were five applicants for the fire chief’s position, although one has since withdrawn his application.
The committee planned to interview two candidates on Thursday night, Sept. 10, and two more on the 17th. Kahrl said all of the candidates have good credentials.
The deadline for fire chief applications was Aug. 31. Maccio’s term as acting fire chief expires on Oct. 3.
Selectmen’s Chairman David King Sr. said 129 tax liens were recently mailed out to property owners who were delinquent on their property taxes. The board will meet with the town assessor on Monday, Sept. 21, to set this year’s tax commitment.
The town’s Solid Waste and Recycling Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the town office.
The next regular meeting of board of selectmen is scheduled for Sept. 21. The meetings are held upstairs in the municipal building hearing room.
