Woolwich sets special town meeting
Woolwich voters will consider transferring a small amount of town-owned acreage at a special town meeting set for 5 p.m. Monday, June 19 at the landmark 1837 Town House at the junction of Old Stage and Dana Mills roads. A select board meeting will follow.
The board met with property owners Matt and Amy Richard and their real estate agent Curtis Fish Monday evening.
The land includes roughly an acre once used as a town landing in addition to property between a small one-lane bridge and Nequasset Brook. Voters discontinued the bridge and road at the annual town meeting in April.
Chairman David King Sr. said the warrant article, not yet written, would be worded to transfer the property over to the Richards. The town’s legal counsel has recommended the board request a statement from the Richards saying no appeal would be filed. Town Administrator Katherine Johnston will contact the town attorney for help drafting the warrant article. A copy will be forwarded to the Richards.
Selectmen will use $3,932 from the contingency account to cover hydrant rental costs. This leaves $2,550 in the account. The fiscal year ends June 30.
King said he had received word from the town’s assessor Woolwich will need to do a revaluation within the next year or two. The last contracted revaluation was done over 13 years ago.
“If it’s done right, a third of the property owners will see their property taxes go up, a third will see them go down and a third will see them stay about the same,” commented King.
Road Commissioner Jack Shaw said the state’s repaving of Middle Road (Route 127) would begin in the next few weeks.
EMS Director Brian Carlton said Woolwich ambulance personnel responded to 11 of 11 calls for assistance since the board last met, May 21. Carlton noted the ambulance department currently has a 95 percent response rate.
Fire Chief Mike Demers said the fire department had responded to six calls since May 21; three were motor vehicle-related. The board thanked Demers and the department for returning the American flags to Route 1 for the summer.
The board will dedicate the pedestrian tunnel at 10 a.m., June 14, Flag Day.
Staff and employee evaluations are scheduled for 4 p.m. June 25.
Appointments included Roger Baffer to the public communications committee and Linda Crawford to the board of appeals.
After waiving a public hearing, the board renewed a liquor license for the Taste of Maine Restaurant.
