Write-in votes to fill vacancies
Wiscasset’s town ballot is lacking a full compliment of candidates. Write-in votes will be needed to decide vacancies on the board of selectmen, and school and budget committees.
Voting for town officers and warrant articles will be held during the state primary election, Tuesday, June 14. The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Wiscasset Community Center.
Town Clerk Linda Perry said there are no contested positions on the town ballot. Ben Rines Jr. and Judith Colby are seeking re-election for two-year terms on the board of selectmen. No one returned nomination papers for a third seat on the board of selectmen being vacated by Jeff Slack. In early March, Slack said he wouldn’t be running for re-election.
Tim Merry took out nomination papers for selectman late last week. The deadline for returning them was Monday, May 2, at 5 p.m. Reached for comment Merry said he’d thought seriously about running but had changed his mind over the weekend and did not return his nomination papers.
“Maybe in another year or two after I retire from working full time I’ll run again,” said Merry, a former selectman and Wiscasset fire chief. “The concern I had is the time commitment, that I’d miss too many of the meetings.”
Michael Dunn is on the ballot for re-election to one of two, three-year terms on the school committee. No one took out nomination papers for the other seat being vacated by Chairman Steve Smith. On April 28, Smith announced he wouldn’t seek re-election.
No one is running for the seven vacant seats on the budget committee. The vacancies include three, three-year terms, three, two-year terms and one, one-year term.
There are two other uncontested candidates on the ballot, Ed Kavanagh and Dean Shea, who are seeking re-election for the two, three-year terms on the Wiscasset Water District.
Concerning write-in candidates, Perry said whoever receives the most votes wins a seat. In the case of a tie, there will be a runoff election.
“When voting for a write-in candidate it is very important to fill in the oval and print the person’s name on the blank line,” she added.
Absentee ballots will be available from May 16 until June 9. The annual Town Report will be ready by the May 17 selectmen’s meeting.
