Boat race, food, fun enjoyed at Woolwich Day
People of all ages from near and far turned out for Woolwich Day, a mid-summer tradition of food and fun that this year featured a boat race.
The first ever canoe and kayak race across Nequasset Lake kicked off Saturday’s celebration at 9 a.m. Winners of the Nequasset Paddle race included Even Goodkowsky and Eric Smith in the tandem class. They posted a winning time of 41:36. Other winners were Liam Scanlon in the junior division, 28:16 and Mary McCauley in the adult single division, 27:04.
Race organizer Kyle Beeton said nine boats took part in the race that started at the boat launch off Old Stage Road and went the full length of the lake, about two miles. Woolwich Fire and EMS had volunteer race spotters on the lake.
The daylong community celebration on the grounds alongside the municipal building featured a used book sale, museum tours, arts and crafts, classic cars, a plant sale, raffling of prizes and more.
Among the biggest hits for the kids was the balloon art provided by the Party Palooga and Rescue Charlie’s Friends, a Woolwich organization offering pets for adoption. There was also the ever popular bounce house and children’s activities sponsored by the Woolwich Junior Firefighters.
The lunch menu included barbecue chicken, grilled burgers, hot dogs and soft drinks. There was also homemade ice cream made by the Hennins from the Shelter Institute, baked goodies and lots of free cotton candy for the kids courtesy of Roger Baffer.
The sky was overcast for the start of the celebration but the predicted rains held off until the afternoon.
Jason Shaw who spent most of the day grilling hamburgers and hot dogs with his fellow selectman Allen Greene called the celebration one of the best ever.
“We’ve had a pretty good crowd coming and going all morning. Everyone seems to be enjoying the music, the food and having a good time, and that’s what it’s all about!”
The event began with a chicken barbecue hosted by the Recreation Committee and fire department Friday evening at the fire house. Proceeds from Saturday’s book sale benefited the Woolwich Historical Society Museum, while monies raised by the raffles are used to support the town's Special Events Committee.
