The walls of the Pemaquid Watershed Association office-gallery will soon be brightened with the fine art of quilting by the Clamshell Quilters, the Lincoln County chapter of the Pine Tree Quilters Guild. From Oct. 22 through Nov. 21, there will be 43 wall quilts displayed with about one-third of them for sale.

A statewide effort began in 1978 to organize quilters into local “guilds.” Enthusiasm has grown and there are now more than 2275 members in over 60 chapters, divided into seven geographical areas of Maine.

Clamshell Quilters has over 30 members, most coming from Damariscotta, and the Bristol and Boothbay peninsulas. They have monthly meetings with speakers and how-to-do-it workshops, sharing new techniques and styles, as well as reaching into the community with various quilt projects. Their mission is to promote the art of quilting. They donate works to local hospice programs as well as assisted living and nursing facilities, among other community programs.

The opening reception for Clamshell Quilters is at the PWA office-gallery on Friday, Oct. 26 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The exhibit can be viewed weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by visiting PWA’s office-gallery at 584 Main St. in Damariscotta, which is across from Young’uns. The show will be up through Nov. 21. Take time to enjoy the beautiful large mural on north end of the garage while there, painted by Susan Bartlett Rice.

Clamshell Quilters is donating 35 percent of proceeds from sales of the quilt art to support PWA’s mission-driven work.

Since 1966, Pemaquid Watershed Association has been a member- and volunteer-supported nonprofit land trust. PWA’s mission is to conserve the natural resources of the Pemaquid Peninsula region through land and water stewardship and education.
