Alna mulls plowing
Alna selectmen on March 27 backed Hagar Enterprises' road treatments. The plowing contractor is doing as told, board members told resident Brittney Morgan Bardo. She said the roads got too much salt and sand.
"Our tax money is literally just dollars coming out the sides of those trucks," Bardo said.
According to Hagar and the board, the firm uses Maine Department of Transportation guidelines and prior select boards’ instructions, including giving added treatment to treacherous spots including a West Alna Road hill and Head Tide Hill. That one has been in great shape, said Third Selectman Greg Shute.
A committee the board recently formed will look at plowing, sanding and salting, selectmen said. The committee will take a holistic look and report back with recommendations, Second Selectman Doug Baston said. Retired selectman David Abbott will chair it.
The board reappointed Amy Stockford town treasurer, Mike Trask fire chief and Tom McKenzie emergency management agency director, code enforcement officer and plumbing inspector. At resident Ralph Hilton's request, the board will invite recent selectman's candidate Les Fossel to talk about how the town might save on the tax rate, as he stated during his run.
Responding to a letter from Ona Brazwell, selectmen said the town did not need her consent to publish in this year’s town report a photo of her child at a public meeting. And Efficiency Maine has given Alna $500 because the town got an energy-efficient heat pump for the new town office. "Yay, money," First Selectman Melissa Spinney said.
Plans called for the archives to be moved to the modular March 28. Other work under way included building a workstation in the clerk’s office.
The board meets next at 6 p.m. April 10 at the town office cape.
On Tuesday, April 2, the town announced via email the town office will be closed Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 12 for the move into the new one. "It is anticipated that we will be open in the new town office on Tuesday, April 16 for business," the email states.
