CLC YMCA awarded Quimby Foundation grant for food system, nutrition work
Central Lincoln County (CLC) YMCA has been announced as a recipient of the 2019 Quimby Foundation Nourishment Grant. Grant funding was awarded in the amount of $15,000 to support food programs and collaborative work with local food systems. Stated in the award letter from the Quimby Foundation was: “Central Lincoln County YMCA was selected to receive funding because of our shared vision to grow the local food system in a way that supports human and environmental health. We are inspired by the approach to human wholeness and your efforts to foster stronger relationships between people and the farms, woods, and waters of Maine.” The Quimby Foundation received $1,102,891 in funding requests, but only had under $400,000 to distribute.
Funding from the Quimby Foundation will support the accessibility of food to youth and families in the community, including the provision of a nutritious snack every day after school for all youth in the building. Additionally, this funding will help the sustainability of FARMS at the Y to visit local food pantries regularly for ongoing nutrition education and resources within the community.
CLC YMCA food programs are enriched by collaborating with several community organizations, including Twin Village Foodbank Farm, the Damariscotta Farmers’ Market, LincolnHealth, the Rotary Club of Damariscotta-Newcastle, Healthy Kids, Lincoln County Gleaners, food pantries, schools, local farms, and more.
