Harbor Theater presents “The Quiet Man,” starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, everybody’s favorite Irish movie to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, one show only, on Saturday, March 14 at 2 p.m. This is the last of the Classic Film Series for 2019-2020.

An Irish-American boxer, Sean Thornton (John Wayne), recovering from the trauma of having accidentally killed a man in the ring, arrives in the Irish village where he was born. Hoping to bury his past and settle down to a life of tranquility, Thornton has purchased the home of his birth from a wealthy local widow (Mildred Natwick), a transaction that has incurred the wrath of pugnacious Squire "Red" Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who coveted the property for himself.

By and by, Wayne falls in love with Danaher’s beautiful, high-spirited sister Mary Kate (Maureen O'Hara). Her insistence that Thornton conduct his courtship in a proper Irish manner - with puckish matchmaker Michaleen Oge Flynn (Barry Fitzgerald) along for the ride as "chaperone"- - is but one obstacle to their future happiness: the other is the Squire, who spitefully refuses to give his consent to his sister's marriage, or to honor the tradition of paying a dowry to Thornton.

When Mary Kate refuses to consummate the marriage until her brother pays up, all hell breaks loose as Thornton decides to “fight it out” with the Squire (despite his swearing never again to fight).

With a large Irish cast, direction by John Ford (Oscar winner for Best Director) and music by Victor Young, this 1952 film is a favorite for those in love with Ireland.
