‘The most important person in the building’
More than 25 people gathered on Zoom Jan. 27 to celebrate the retirement of head Wiscasset Middle High School custodian Jeff Speed. He will retire Feb. 28, after 46 years of service to Wiscasset School Department.
WMHS Principal Chuck Lomonte started off the celebration. “You're a class act, Jeff, and a really great worker, a great colleague.” Lomonte said Speed started at the school in 1974 at the age of 20 and also drove a bus at one time. Superintendent of Schools Terry Wood added, “I am very grateful for your presence, and you will be greatly missed. So thank you so much.” Lomonte also announced the staff had collected $500 for a gift card to Lowe’s.
WMHS senior Kyle Ricker shared a slideshow thanking Speed on behalf of the students. It included photos going back decades including family photos and all set to the Billy Idol song “Speed.” WMHS staff member Deb Pooler noted the yearbook has been dedicated to Speed twice by the students. She said, “They just think the world of him and I hope Jeff realizes that he’s been a real good role model for the kids in our school system and in our community.”
WMHS Assistant Principal Warren Cossette shared several stories about Speed. “Jeff through it all was one of the kindest people that you'll ever meet. Jeff has a has a penchant for showing up when anybody needs anything. Have you ever noticed that he kind of materializes, like on television? Wow, I need a ream of paper, bang, just right there. He's like Radar on ‘M.A.S.H.’”
According to the celebrants, Speed had served Wiscasset Fire Department for 38 years and the ambulance service for 39. WMHS teacher Michelle Fraser said, “It just shows how much you care about your community.”
WMHS teacher Ralph Keyes, who is also retiring this year, recalled being hired by then-Superintendent Bill Cumming. After he met with Cumming, the two ran into Speed outside, and Cumming said: “Ralph, I want you to meet the most important person in the building.” Keyes said he’d only been working with Jeff about three quarters of his career, but “I’ve always admired your grace, and how calm you are, your demeanor, your competence, and especially your kindness.”
Director of Maintenance and Transportation John Merry wrapped up the remarks by saying, “We are going to have to look far and wide to find somebody to replace Jeff that's got his heart, his dedication to the school district and just his love for the community. And I don't know if that can be attained, but we'll certainly do our best.”
Speed said, “I’d just like to thank everyone.” In addition to fellow staff members, Speed’s wife of almost 42 years, Debbie, and several other family members including grandchildren attended.
