Midcoast Senior College announces classes
Midcoast Senior College, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing educational opportunities to lifelong senior learners in Midcoast Maine, has announced a January and February line-up of events that range in topics from Maine’s future economy and historical past, how-to’s on photography, writing, fly-tying, and sign language, and lectures on medicine, history, arts, and literature. Most events are completely free of charge.
For the first time ever Midcoast Senior College is holding Winter Session, sponsored by Thornton Oaks Retirement Community. Winter Session is in addition to our Winter Wisdom, free lectures and new Maine Economy series. Topics in Winter session are well varied to suit a wide range of interests. Many are free. Highlights include the following.
iPhone Photography for Motivated Novices—Jan. 10, 17, 24 and 31, 9:30-11:30 a.m., Workshop ($45) in-person. This is a workshop with three follow-up tutoring sessions for folks who want to capture and edit images with their iPhone cameras. Where: Curtis Library, Brunswick, Room 206.
Cuisine Talk: American Flavors—Jan. 10, 17 and 24, 1-2:30 p.m. Discussion Group (free) in-person. This workshop will explore America’s unique culinary history based on the research of Sarah Lohman, a self-described historic gastronomist. Sarah’s research explores the amazing journey of how eight flavors made their way into our kitchens and lives. Where: Topsham Public Library.
ASL Handshapes for Beginners—Jan. 11 and 18, 9:30-11 a.m. Workshop (free) in-person. This workshop meets twice: the first meeting is a relaxed presentation of the basic aspect of sign language, the 36 basic handshapes used to form the A-Z manual alphabet and numbers 0-9. Where: Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick, Room 206.
Fly Tying For Beginners—Jan. 12, 19, 26 and Feb. 2, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Workshop ($45) in-person. This class is designed to teach students the basic skills and techniques needed for discovering the exciting world of fly tying. Where: UMA Room 119.
Memoir Writing and Meditation—Jan. 12, 19 and 26, 1-3 p.m. Workshop ($45) in-person. This workshop is designed to start up your meditation practice and introduce you to the basic principles of memoir writing under the guidance of an experienced meditator and writer. Where: UMA Room 119.
Book Talk—Jan. 12 or 19 10-11:30 a.m. Discussion Group (free) on Zoom. Join us for lively conversation about books. Books you've read or are reading . . . history, biography, fiction, mystery, best sellers, poetry, classics, self-help, you name it. Optional prompts to help guide our discussion will be emailed before the meeting. (Select the date you wish to attend when you register.)
