Freeman Geyer’s seasonally magical waterfront scene with Santa and the reindeer flying in front of a full moon won Grand Prize in the 2022 Eastside Waterfront Park Family Christmas Ornament Decorating contest. The ornaments provide artistic community members with an unusual canvas for art.

About 60 people entered the third annual event. All entries were dropped off at Brown’s on Saturday, Dec. 10 and the judging began around 2:30 p.m. There are five age categories in the contest, and cash prizes were awarded for all winning ornaments. Geyer won the largest prize of $250 for his. Other cash prizes included first place $100; second place $75 and third place, $50.

People’ Choice (adult): 85-year-old Linda Bohan’s painted ornament. The  Junior People’s Choice award went to 9-year-old Brently Maxie who entered the first contest in 2020;  he received a Judge’s Award. Maxie’s ornament held chocolate treasure inside, while large eyes and a festive red nose adorned the outside.

In the 60-plus category: First place went to Dianne Howe’s Santa head; Second Place: Diane Randlett for “In the Park” plein air in Boothbay Harbor; Third Place: Stephanie Dionne’s needlepoint design of bouys adorned with macramé tendrils accented with beading and tiny lobster charms.

Ages 16-59 category: First Place: Nick Ullo’s knit octopus; Second Place: Duncan Hardwick’s painted ornament filled with fishing line and painted outside were a lobster and a crab in a lobster trap; Third Place: Jen Field with a Winnie the Pooh-themed ornament.

Ages 12-15: First Place: Moriah Smith’s snowman family; Second Place: Zuriel Smith’s buoy Christmas tree; Third Place: Emmalin Nichols’ sparkles-filled ornament adorned with silver and white snowflake designs.

Ages 8-11: First Place: Dory Pinkham’s octopus; Second Place: Landyn Peters’ Grinch; Third Place: Eli Hyson – check out that mirror glaze!

Ages 8 and under: First Place: CeCe Pinkham’s wild bird; Second Place: Theodore Kurtz’s snowman; Third Place: Jackson Fallon’s animal making its way across a snow-covered landscape.

“They were all so amazing,” said Park Committee member Deborah Todte. “It was so hard to judge!”

All ornaments are at Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce, 192 Townsend Ave., Boothbay Harbor, and can be picked up there during business hours Monday - Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
