Steven Smith
Steven Smith, 73, of "East by God" Peru, Maine passed away on Jan. 17, 2023 at home with his family by his side.
Born on March 13, 1949, to Lloyd and Joanne Smith, Steve graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford, Maine as the captain of their 1967 State Champion football team. He went on to college at Kansas State University on a football scholarship for a short time before enlisting in the Army. Steve was in the 1st Calvary division from 1969-1971 serving time in Vietnam, and was awarded the Purple Heart along with the Sharp Shooter Badge (M-14 rifle).
Steve lived life to the absolute fullest, with fortitude and excitement. He was an avid skier and craftsman. Steve sought adventure, moving with his family from Maine, to Maui, to Colorado and Alaska, bringing it full circle back to Maine. A master wood sculpture, carpenter, boat builder, and story teller, Steve was a loving husband, father, and friend to all.
Steve was predeceased by his parents and survived by his wife, Jean E Smith; his three children, daughters Sierra Mencucci (husband Dan, grandchildren Maia and Kellon), Heather Casey (husband Ryan, granddaughter Harper) of Boothbay; son Brian Smith; sister Cheryl Nokes (husband Steve); brothers David Smith, Gary Smith (wife Nora); along with many nieces and nephews.
A Remembrance Ceremony will be held at Thibault’s Remembrance Center at 250 Penobscot St., Rumford, on Saturday, Feb. 25. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon, with military honors following. Anyone wishing to share their memories and stories of Steve will be encouraged to do so at that time.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers and gifts, donations be made in Steve's memory to the Travis Mills Foundation, as he was passionate and proud of his time served and the care of veterans.
