A new look for Heartwood’s theater camp
Heartwood Theater Summer Camp registration is open for students graduating grades 5-12, and enrollment is half full. Camp will be challenging and encouraging, focusing on ensemble, skills development, confidence building and classic literature.
Parental feedback from Summer Camp 2022 recognizes the value and benefits of this program, “I want to thank you for putting on such a great educational program. It was structured, pushed students to work hard, and helped them build self-confidence, by applying themselves to something meaningful. Kids sense authenticity from a mile away, and we appreciate the way the instructors cared about the students and encouraged them to support one another.”
Two options are available for students, this year: Option 1: Morning workshops in dance, stage combat, basic mime and clowning, comic acting technique AND afternoon rehearsals for a full production of “Scapino!” (see description, below). This camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 26 – July 15, including two public performances on July 14 and 15 (no camp on July 4th). Camp fee is $900. Students who enroll in the full-day option will receive information about how to submit a short video for casting purposes, in mid-May.
Option 2: Morning workshops, only. This option runs from 9am to noon, June 26 – July 7 (no camp on July 4th). Camp fee is $500.
“Scapino!” was adapted in 1974 by Jim Dale and Frank Dunlop, from “Les Fourberies de Scapin” (“The Trickeries of Scapin”) by Moliere. The play is set in 1970s Naples and uses a variety of British and traditional comic styles. The deceitful valet Scapino contrives to bring his master’s children of two sons and two daughters and their various loves together through all kinds of trickery - despite his master’s own plans for them. The fully staged production will feature modern language, tap dance andvocal music, feats of comedy, performed on a complete set, with lights and costumes.
Students will work with professional staff to include: Griff Braley, Heartwood’s artistic director and LA drama teacher; Michelle Bruckner, Broadway singer/dancer/actress/choreographer; Stephen Shore & Ray Huth, professional actors and certified stage combat instructors.
Numerous business sponsors make this summer camp possible: Heartwood’s Season Sponsors, Bath Savings Institution and Chesterfield Associates, Inc; Season Youth Sponsor, Damariscotta Hardware; Education Sponsor, First National Bank; Camp Sponsor, J. Edward Knight Insurance.
Scholarships are available, with support from Bath Savings Institution, Colby & Gale, and the Cheney Financial Group.
